How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home per month?

About $41.67 per month for a typical driver. Covering 1,000 miles a month in a 4 mi/kWh EV puts roughly 250 kWh into the battery, which means about 278 kWh drawn from the grid once you account for 90% charging efficiency. At $0.15/kWh that is $41.67 a month, or $500 a year. Most households land between $25 and $80 a month: the three things that move the number are how far you drive, how efficient your EV is, and your rate per kWh. How much does it cost to charge an EV to full?

$10.00 for a full charge of a 60 kWh battery at $0.15/kWh. The battery stores 60 kWh, but the meter sees 66.7 kWh because roughly 10% is lost as heat in the onboard charger and cables — so the cost to charge is (60 ÷ 0.90) × $0.15. Scale it to your car: a 40 kWh compact costs about $6.67 to fill at the same rate, and a 100 kWh SUV or truck about $16.67. A full charge is a useful sticker number, but few drivers ever run to empty; the monthly and per-mile figures describe real spending better.

What does an EV cost per mile to charge?

About 4.17 cents per mile at $0.15/kWh in a 4 mi/kWh EV. Each mile takes 0.25 kWh out of the battery and 0.28 kWh off the meter after charging losses. Efficiency matters as much as price: the same rate costs about 4.76 cents per mile in a 3.5 mi/kWh crossover and about 3.55 cents per mile in a 4.7 mi/kWh compact. Cost of charging an EV at home vs a charging station

Home charging is usually two to four times cheaper than public DC fast charging. Home rates commonly run $0.12–$0.20/kWh, while fast-charging networks typically charge $0.30–$0.60/kWh. To price a public network with this calculator, enter its price per kWh in the electricity rate field: at $0.45/kWh the same 12,000 miles a year costs about $125.00 a month ($1,500 a year, 12.5 cents per mile) versus $41.67 a month at home, and a 60 kWh fill costs about $30.00 instead of $10.00. Treat the public figure as a slight overestimate, since DC fast charging loses a little less energy than the 90% default assumed for Level 2 charging at home. Is charging an EV cheaper than buying gas?

Yes, in most cases by a wide margin. Add a comparison car's gas price and MPG above and the calculator prices the same annual mileage as fuel. Driving 12,000 miles in a 30 MPG car at $3.50/gallon costs $1,400 a year (about 11.7 cents per mile), against $500 a year to charge at home (4.17 cents per mile) — a $900 annual saving. The comparison narrows where electricity is expensive and gas is cheap: at $0.30/kWh, home charging costs $1,000 a year and the saving falls to $400. How It Works

Cost per Charge

Cost per Charge = (Battery Capacity ÷ Charging Efficiency) × Electricity Rate

Charging an EV always pulls slightly more electricity from the grid than the battery actually stores, because some energy is lost as heat. A 60 kWh battery charged at 90% efficiency draws 66.7 kWh from the grid; at $0.15/kWh, that's $10.00 for a full charge.

Cost per Mile

Cost per Mile = (1 ÷ Vehicle Efficiency ÷ Charging Efficiency) × Electricity Rate

Vehicle efficiency (miles per kWh) tells you how far the energy in the battery takes you; dividing by charging efficiency accounts for the extra grid energy needed to put it there. A car averaging 4 mi/kWh at $0.15/kWh and 90% charging efficiency costs about 4.17 cents per mile to drive.

Monthly Cost

Monthly Cost = (Annual Miles ÷ 12 ÷ Vehicle Efficiency ÷ Charging Efficiency) × Electricity Rate

Rather than guessing how many times a month you plug in, this calculator works from your annual mileage: it converts miles driven into grid energy used, then applies your rate. Driving 12,000 miles/year (1,000 miles/month) at 4 mi/kWh and 90% efficiency uses about 278 kWh from the grid each month — roughly $41.67/month at $0.15/kWh.

Charging Losses

Charging efficiency is the share of grid electricity that actually ends up stored in the battery; the rest is lost as heat in the onboard charger, cables, and battery thermal management system. Level 2 home charging (240V) is typically 88-92% efficient. This calculator defaults to 90%, so a 60 kWh battery draws 66.7 kWh from the grid rather than exactly 60 kWh — the 6.7 kWh difference is the charging loss.

Time-of-Use Charging

If you enter an off-peak electricity rate, the calculator applies it to the same grid energy total used for your standard-rate cost, so the only variable that changes is price per kWh. For example, at 3,333 kWh/year (the grid energy for 12,000 miles/year at 4 mi/kWh and 90% efficiency), a $0.15/kWh standard rate costs $500/year, while an $0.08/kWh off-peak rate costs $266.67/year — a savings of $233.33/year from shifting charging to off-peak hours.
